Drinking your way to debt

Are debt and drinking connected? Whilst reading articles connected to Alcoholics Anonymous, a pattern formed which showed how the compulsive behaviour of a drinker is similar to that of someone in debt.

Believing we can control our drinking and our debt on our own is a common similarity and teenagers use credit cards and alcohol as a means of feeling grown-up. There is also the ecstatic feeling when an individual has been granted an unsecured loan, almost as if they have won the lottery. The same feeling can be achieved with alcohol but as the debt kicks in and the hangover takes hold, the feelings of joy are soon replaced with misery.

Drinking and debt come with the old story of promising to never drink or overspend again but old habits die hard and addicts soon revert back to their old ways of overindulgence.

The more you read the literature obtained from the AA, the more common the patterns between debt and drinking become.

Debtors, like alcoholics cannot stop their compulsive behaviour. Most refuse to admit that they have a problem and cling on to their false crutch which slowly leads them to hospitals, mental institutions or even suicide.

Drinkers and debtors believe that they have their situation under control and can stop whenever they please but this is pure fantasy and the vicious cycle never ends unless they seek help with drinking from alcoholics anonymous and seek debt solutions like IVAs from a debt management company.
