Gambling with debt

A 34 year old gambling addict found himself in deep water when he owed £50,000 in gambling debt.

Ian Cobble was picked up by police as they carried out routine checks on vehicles on a Scottish motorway. The officers found over £300,000 worth of cannabis resin in the boot of his car.

Cobble tried to defend himself by saying that he was a courier and was transporting the packages from Manchester to Glasgow for a client in return for £400.

Cobble’s solicitor explained that his client took a job as a taxi driver. Certain clients of the taxi company had asked Cobble to do private delivery and collection work for them which involved delivering packages and collecting money. His solicitor claims that it was these people who had also encouraged Mr Cobble to carry cannabis. However, instead of delivering all of the money, Cobble used it for gambling.

Cobble’s dad was so desperate to help his son manage debt that he even offered to remortgage his home but the people involved were not prepared to wait for the £50,000 that Cobble owed them.
