Money is one of the biggest causes of couples arguing. Being in debt it puts unwanted stress on relationships. It's best to talk openly with your partner and get debt counselling to find the best solution. The IVA Zone can recommend who you can contact for more advice or to arrange an IVA. There are many options for couples in serious debt, including getting an IVA.
We’re in debt together
Many couples in debt acknowledge that their debt arose as a joint effort. Married or common law partners may be able to link their IVA together if they have joint debts.
What if its just one of you with debt?
If your partner has nothing to do with the debts you’ve accumulated and you make a decision to enter into an IVA alone, your total household earnings are still taken into consideration in deciding what you should pay. Your partner will not be required to make any payments directly into the IVA, but they would be expected to contribute financially to the household.
We’ve broken up with debt
If you and your partner had joint accounts you are both responsible for paying that debt. If you divorce or break up you are still liable for paying it off. If your partner doesn’t contribute to paying off your joint debt, your credit rating can be affected too.
