There are various companies/professionals that offer 'debt advice' in this country. Since the very well documented credit crunch many people have sought such advice.
The first type of organisation that may offer this is a non profit organisation such as the Citizens Advice Bureau. This is a registered charity that looks to help anyone with financial, legal or other problems. They have a team of over 20000 highly trained volunteers and continue to help many people who are struggling. They will tell you what your rights are in a given situation and let you know how to negotiate with companies to agree suitable actions.
The second types are organisations that make a profit from liaising between yourself and the companies to which you are in debt. This can be through a number of methods. This could just be a debt management arrangement, IVA or bankruptcy. This is not necessarily a bad option, however, do watch out to see what they are making from this. How big are their fees? What are you getting out of your arrangement? Also, could the CAB be helping better for free? It may well be that they advise you to opt for one of the latter options, however, there may be another way to solve your debt problems.
